Full Stop Rates
Our budget is small, and most of our editors (myself included) are unpaid.
We have a few paying sections, but the unpaid sections are great for early-stage writers, as our editors are more engaged than at the average website. We don't run listicles/clickbait/etc, and we'll take your weird ideas -- and linguistic experiments -- seriously.
Our pieces generally involve (to put it as generally as possible) writers interfacing with extant material. We don't usually run personal essays, but also don't discourage writers from bringing themselves into their pieces.
Non-paying sections:
-
Reviews are our bread & butter, we publish 3 or 4 per week. We specialize in debut works, works in translation, and experimental lit. Many of our reviewers are MFA students; it's a great way to get a few solid bylines, get a sense of what's going on in the small press world, and meet other oddball writers.
-
Blog: This is my section, and it's a total free-for-all. (Our podcast interviews also run on the blog, but those are with different editors). I'm interested in ephemera, esoterica, "low art," horror films, tarot, zines, etc etc etc. I'm a relatively new editor (less than a year), and was tapped partly because I'm into adventurous layouts.
Paying sections:
-
Features: Our Patreon account funds these essays which are sent via newsletter and later published on our features section. These pay $100 (sometimes more) and are generally from more established writers. A month after they go out to our Patreons, they go up online.
-
Reviews Quarterly: The reviews editors collect & publish the most interesting reviews in a quarterly. When we have the budget, we commision an essay to lead the epub, at similar rates to the standard features (or more if the piece is particularly research-intensive or ambitious; eg, leftist writer Shane Burley's deep dive into fascist publishing).
-
Full Stop Fellows: When we can land grant funding, we run a fellowship program. The output from this tends to be a bit more expansive, process-based, leaning into art-making in some capacity. The budget depends exclusively on grant funding, so you just have to watch the FS email for open calls. We don't have much grant $ this year, because of... you know, everything.
Thanks again for reaching out, and good luck out there.
